What type of laser machine do you recommend for plastic laser marking?

For laser marking black on colored or transparent polymers, or marking white on black polymers, we recommend fiber laser markers. For marking white on colored polymers, only a UV laser can be used.

Which plastic polymers are suitable for laser marking?

Many plastics and thermoplastics can be laser-marked. If a plastic’s properties make it unsuitable for high-performance laser marking, it can often be modified with a laser marking additive or masterbatch. Additives are highly effective with most polymers, including ABS, Acetal, Nylon, Polycarbonate, PET/PETG, Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Polyester, PVC, POM, PBT,  PPS, Polyurethane, TPU, TPE, TPR, Rubbers, and Styrene.

Why use laser marking additives?

Not all polymers can achieve optimal laser marking results. Polymers like PE or PP are almost transparent to common near-infrared lasers operating at around 1064 nm. Thus, the use of laser marking additives, laser-sensitive additives, or laser-activated additives is crucial in many polymers to achieve successful high-performance laser marking.

How to use laser marking additives?
  1. Select the right laser marking additive masterbatch for your polymer, and ensure compatibility.
  2. Mix the laser marking additive thoroughly with the material to be marked. The ratio of additive to material will depend on the specific additive and material being used. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the correct mixing ratio.
  3. For injection molding and marking tests, ensure to iteratively adjust laser parameters and conduct multiple tests to attain optimal marking results.
Do other plastic additives affect the laser marking effect?
  1. Some common plastic additives that may affect laser marking include:

    – Plastic tougheners may result in uneven surfaces or burn marks after laser marking.

    – Antioxidants may affect the interaction between the laser and the plastic material, leading to suboptimal marking effects.

    – Certain fillers or reinforcement agents may alter the optical properties of the marking area, affecting the final marking effect.

    – Additives such as color pigments can also influence the capacity for laser marking.

    When using laser marking, it is recommended to conduct thorough testing before actual production to ensure that the selected plastic additives do not have adverse effects on the marking results. Additionally, adjustments to laser parameters or selecting the appropriate laser wavelength may be necessary for achieving the best marking effect based on the specific circumstances.

Why can't additional black masterbatch, black pigment, or carbon black be added for applications of laser marking white on black polymers?

In laser marking white on black plastic products, please refrain from using carbon black masterbatch/toner pigment in the injection molding process. Instead, replace the black masterbatch with 1%-2% laser marking additives to ensure optimal laser absorption and marking effect.
